FreeMPC

Help

System Requirements
- All you need is a computer with Windows and Java 1.4 or above (click here to download) installed. You probably have it already, click here to check.
Attention: If you complete the download and for some reason the file downloaded is "FreeMPC.zip" you have to change it's name to "FreeMPC.jar"

Installation
You don't need to install FreeMPC. Just copy it do a directory of your choice (read below) and double click the FreeMPC.jar file. If you have Java 1.4 or above the application will launch immediately. To launch it from a command line you can type "java -jar FreeMPC" without the quotation marks.

All the help on using the application is on the FAQ of this site.
The two problems that people seem to be having with the usage of the application are due to:

- Not running FreeMPC from a directory on which they can write to: you'll get a "There was an error while creating temporary files" error because the FreeMPC.jar file is being run from a folder that is read-only. The easiest way to work around this is probably to create a new folder, place the FreeMPC.jar file there and run it (double-click) from that location, as noted by blue fox. To change the folder's read-only state you have to right click the folder that contains the FreeMPC.jar file, deselect the "Read Only" box and click Apply.

If you have a USB storage device here's an alternative solution:
1) put the FreeMPC.jar file in the USB pen and run it from there
2) choose the format, files to convert, destination directory (step 3) and everything else
3) convert the files
3.1) if you're still having trouble create a new empty directory inside the USB pen
3.2) on the Destination Directory (step 3 on the program), insert the location of the directory you just created on the USB pen
Do note that this problem occurs due to the peculiar way that Windows XP manages it's folder permissions (thank heavens for Linux). Because of that, this solution is equally valid if you use a FAT partition or a network drive where you can read and write to, instead of the USB storage device.

- Having the .jar file extension associated with an archive compression utility like Winzip/WinRAR/etc: the .jar extension should be associated with the Java Runtime Environment that is installed on your computer. In the FAQ section of the website it's explained how to work out this problem; on a side note, it'll probably be easier and faster if you just reinstall Java (meaning, the Java Runtime Environment) on your computer (click here to download). If your computer has Java installed and the .jar files are correctly associated with it, the only thing you have to do to run the application is double-click on the FreeMPC.jar file.
